Magnitude 5.3 earthquake in the Northern Cape in South Africa

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake was measured around 40km north of Loeriesfontein in the Northern Cape in South Africa at 2:51am on 22 December 2024, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGC).
The South African Council for Geoscience released a statement confirming the earthquake, as well as the 2.9 magnitude aftershock at 5:25am.
The epicentre of the quake was at 30.445°S 19.4352°E.
We have received reports that the quake was felt in Cape Town and as far afield as Mossel Bay, George and Sedgefield on the Garden Route.
