City Power begins load reduction from Monday 10 June 2024

City Power will begin load reduction measures on Monday 10 June to address the critical electricity consumption levels in Johannesburg according to the power supplier.
The implementation will occur during peak times from 4am to 10am and 4pm to 10pm in high-density areas and suburbs with high usage levels.
This decision follows ongoing efforts to reduce demand, including the use of ripple relay systems to cut electricity to geysers and intensified actions against illegal connections.
City power says energy consumption has continued to rise despite warnings and the measures are critical to prevent equipment failure and prolonged outages.
The load reduction will affect over 80 areas grouped in six blocks, with each block experiencing up to 2.5 hours of power cuts daily until the network stabilises.
The city has observed a significant increase in both peak and off-peak loads recently, with some areas experiencing up to 110% increase in consumption.
City Power urged residents to reduce their electricity usage and adopt energy-saving practices to help stabilise the network and minimise the need for load reduction.
