Eskom reduces stage 2 load-shedding but more expected for the winter
Tue, 18 May 2021 – Staff Writer
Eskom has suspended load-shedding during the day as of 4am on Tuesday morning, although stage 2 will continue from 5pm until 10pm.
The power utility implemented stage 2 load-shedding on Sunday due to a loss of ten generating units at seven power stations which brought the unplanned capacity loss to 16 118MW, on top of the 4 171MW out due to planned maintenance.
An Eskom statement said that while seven generation units had been returned to service and this allowed a suspension during the day, this was insufficient to fully supply the evening peak.
While the outlook for the remainder of the week was expected to improve, high evening peaks meant more load-shedding was possible if there was any further deterioration in the generation capacity.
An Eskom spokesperson warned that evening load-shedding was likely to occur regularly during the winter period.
