No injuries after explosion at Medupi Power Station – Eskom
Mon, 9 August 2021
No injuries have been reported and all employees and contractors have been accounted for after an explosion at unit 4 of the Medupi Power Station late on Sunday night.
Unit 4 has been out of service since 6 August and after the explosion all work on the unit was suspended with immediate effect. This included the suspension of all permits to work on the plant until further notice.
The incident is also suspected to have resulted in Unit 5 tripping.
According to Eskom, inspections and assessments will begin in order to determine the cause of the incident and extent of the damage once the unit has been cleared by the Fire Chief and resident engineers.
The utility says it will update the public on further developments regarding the explosion, as well as the impact that it will have on the national electricity grid.
